However, we were not deterred and after our English brekky, headed off to Broadway train station to catch the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Train from Broadway to Cheltenham Race Course.
We decided to ride the train all the way to Cheltenham and stop off at stations on the return journey.
The rain persisted, but we were able to enjoy views of the lush countryside, complete with paddocks of horses, sheep, deer and cows.
At Cheltenham Race Course we alighted to have a quick look around while the rain had stopped.
On the return trip, we chose to get off at Winchcombe to have a look at the village.
Winchcombe centre was a 25 minute walk from the station, or a shuttle bus ride. As the dark clouds we could see meant further downpours were likely, we decided to use the shuttle bus. The lovely attendant rang the bus for us, but as there was no answer, we decided to brave the elements and walk in to town .
Unfortunately, after 5 - 10 minutes of walking, the skies opened and the rain poured down!
We took shelter under a tree at the front of a school, tempted to go into the office to get out of the rain. The school bus was parked at the school and Peter the bus driver took pity on us. He offered to drive us back to the station! What a lovely man!
We opted for hot soup at the station's cafe and abandoned the idea of getting into town.
